Project Overview:
"High schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic movies with his co-worker Earl, finds his outlook forever altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer."
I enjoyed working on this film from its initial stages of creating a look and feel to the end, including creating a typeface for marketing materials. The research included many hours of looking through photographers with subjects of teenagers and their lifestyles. I also researched more realistic scenes that included iconic settings in Pittsburgh.
Once shooting ended, I worked on creating a typeface for the film's title design. We went through many ideas, which you can see in the process and exploration section. Ultimately we made a typeface called "Squirrel." This typeface embodied the playfulness that the characters had in their short films and, at the same type, kept a uniform look throughout the film that did not take up too much attention but was enough to give a delicate sense of personality. We needed range to get through certain scenes that were comical and, simultaneously, the difficult scenes where emotions were high. It was challenging to strike that balance in a typeface design.
